'Echoes of Myanmar' - 15 - 18 October 2025 - Atrium, The Hague
Since 2017, nearly a million Rohingya have fled violence in Myanmar. Without citizenship, they now live in overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh, often invisible to the outside world. This exhibition gives them a face and a voice.
View handmade objects, impressive portraits and listen to personal stories. Be moved, open your eyes and listen to the voice of the Rohingya. Echoes of Myanmar is a collaboration between the Museum of Humanity and: The Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre (RCMC) of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Stichting Vluchteling, Hope Foundation, Embassy of Bangladesh in the Netherlands and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the Atrium, large portrait banners by the Museum of Humanity are on display. They depict the creators of objects from the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre and patients of the Hope Foundation. Alongside video fragments, display cases, informative panels, and personal stories, they create a powerful and moving experience. Echoes of Myanmar is a call to open our eyes to a forgotten crisis.
Art and Crafts
In early 2025, the Museum of Humanity visited the Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar, the largest refugee camp in the world. Here, IOM runs the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre: a creative and safe space where music, art, crafts, and memories contribute to identity and resilience. A selection of handmade objects is displayed in the Atrium, testifying to hope, pride, and creativity. For the first time, they are being shown in the Netherlands.
Chronic Illness
This exhibition goes beyond culture. Through intimate portraits and stories, visitors experience what it means to live in the camp with a chronic illness. The Hope Foundation provides medical assistance to these patients, with Stichting Vluchteling supporting this work as a partner of the exhibition.
VR Experience
A unique feature is an impressive VR experience that allows visitors to walk virtually through the camp. Created by Stichting Vluchteling, this immersive journey offers a poignant glimpse into the daily lives of the refugees. The VR installation is available only at selected times.

The International Organization for Migration
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the UN migration agency, working to make migration safe, dignified and beneficial for all. Active in over 100 countries, IOM has been a trusted partner in Bangladesh since 1992. Since the Rohingya influx in 2017, IOM has played a key role in delivering life-saving aid and supporting over one million refugees and their host communities in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. Its work includes shelter, health care, water and sanitation, protection and more – responding to urgent needs while promoting long-term recovery and inclusion.
Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre
The Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre (RCMC), established by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the refugee camps of Bangladesh, preserves and celebrates Rohingya culture, traditions, and history. The artefacts in this exhibition were created by both young and older members of the Rohingya community in the Cox’s Bazar camps. Through exhibitions, workshops, and storytelling RCMC helps refugees keep their heritage alive and pass it on to younger generations. The centre also provides a safe space for learning, where music, art, crafts, and stories help nurture identity, pride, and resilience in challenging times.
