About Museum of Humanity

Museum of Humanity organizes pop-up exhibitions with portraits and stories to make humanity shine – like masterpieces. As an invitation to get an eye for each other and to discover that everyone has the same basic needs. In this way we contribute to a world in which everyone feels seen.

Museum of Humanity, based in the Netherlands, was founded in 2001 after a dream by photographer Ruben Timman about a dilapidated and dark museum. It is a metaphor for the state of the world and our humanity. That dream forms the starting point for portray humanity as dignified as possible. Over the past twenty years Museum of Humanity collected some eight thousand portraits of people all over the world. Timman and his team always photographs people in front of a black canvas, so that everyone comes into the picture equally – whether it is a wealthy businessman, a child or a person on the run.

Since 2019, thousands of people have visited the permanent museum in Amsterdam and the various pop-up exhibitions in different countries. In recent years, more than five thousand students have also taken part in a teaching program of the School of Humanity educational branch.

In a world in which people are increasingly opposed to each other rather than next to each other, the Museum of Humanity - always together with local partners - brings people together around the exhibitions. So that people from different worlds can see each other, learn from each other and see the other as a masterpiece.

Tim B Gilman: "In June of 2021 after hearing a great deal about the Museum of Humanity and the work of photographer Ruben Timman in transforming a site where the military had once produced bombs and grenades into a place that currently honors humanity and the common good in all. We knew that on our next trip to the Netherlands a visit to the museum was a must. These are just a handful of the images that I made during my afternoon visit. Enjoy! I encourage you to visit, support & learn from the heart and passion behind this project . . . most of all get out of your personal silo and get to know those living around you."

It all started with an unique dream...
